These severed finger hot dogs are a hilarious and delicious Halloween treat that looks disgusting but tastes like a backyard cookout. Made with simple ingredients like hot dogs, sliced almonds, and a smoky ‘blood’ sauce, they’re the perfect trick and treat for any Halloween party.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12–16 hot dogs (standard-size beef or pork, e.g., Nathan’s or Oscar Mayer)
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds (raw or lightly toasted)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup or yellow mustard
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (e.g., Sweet Baby Ray’s)
  • 1 tablespoon sriracha or hot sauce (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • A few drops of red food coloring (optional, gel preferred)
  • 12–16 hot dog buns (optional)
  • Fresh parsley or chives, chopped (optional, for garnish)
  • Black sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep the hot dogs: Lay a hot dog flat on a cutting board. Using a sharp paring knife, cut a small, shallow ‘V’ notch about 1/2 inch from one end. Make three shallow, diagonal cuts along the length of the hot dog to mimic knuckles. Repeat for all hot dogs.
  2. Boil the hot dogs: Fill a large pot with enough water to cover the hot dogs by at least an inch. Bring to a rolling boil. Carefully drop the scored hot dogs into the water and boil for 4-5 minutes, until they curl and the cuts open up. Remove with a slotted spoon or tongs and let cool slightly.
  3. Attach the ‘fingernails’: While the hot dogs are still warm, dip one side of a sliced almond into a dab of ketchup or mustard. Press the almond, glue-side down, into the ‘V’ notch at the end of the hot dog. Hold for a few seconds to set. Repeat for all hot dogs.
  4. Make the ‘blood’ sauce: In a small bowl, combine the barbecue sauce, sriracha (if using), and liquid smoke. Stir well. Add red food coloring a drop at a time until desired shade is reached. Set aside.
  5. Assemble and serve: Arrange the hot dog ‘fingers’ on a serving platter. Brush or drizzle the ‘blood’ sauce over them, getting it into the knuckle cuts and around the fingernails. Garnish with parsley or chives and black sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

You can boil the hot dogs and attach the almonds up to a day in advance. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat in a skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side before adding the sauce. Don’t skip the liquid smoke in the sauce—it adds a smoky depth that makes the hot dogs taste grilled. For a spicier version, add more sriracha or a pinch of cayenne. For a vegetarian version, use plant-based hot dogs.
