apple cider old fashioned - featured image

A warm, spiced twist on the classic Old Fashioned, this cocktail combines bourbon, fresh apple cider, and maple syrup for a comforting fall drink that’s quick and easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon (e.g., Buffalo Trace or Maker’s Mark)
  • 1 oz (30 ml) fresh unfiltered apple cider
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) pure maple syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters (optional)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (for garnish and stirring)
  • 1 strip orange peel (for garnish)
  • 1 large ice cube or 23 smaller cubes

Instructions

  1. Chill your Old Fashioned glass in the freezer for 5-10 minutes, or fill with ice water while prepping ingredients, then dump out.
  2. In the chilled glass, combine 1 teaspoon maple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, and 1 dash orange bitters (if using). Swirl gently to coat the bottom.
  3. Pour in 1 oz (30 ml) of fresh apple cider. Stir with a bar spoon for 15-20 seconds until the maple syrup is fully dissolved.
  4. Add 2 oz (60 ml) of bourbon. Stir gently for another 10-15 seconds to combine.
  5. Place one large ice cube (or 2-3 smaller cubes) into the glass. Stir gently for 5-10 seconds to chill without over-diluting.
  6. Express the oils from a strip of orange peel over the drink, rub the peel around the rim, and drop it in. Insert a cinnamon stick into the drink.
  7. Serve immediately and sip slowly.

Notes

For best results, use fresh unfiltered apple cider and a bourbon you enjoy sipping. Stir for 30 seconds total before adding ice for proper dilution. If too sweet, add an extra dash of Angostura bitters. If too strong, add a splash more apple cider. The cinnamon stick infuses as you sip.
