Ingredients

Scale
  • 6–8 fresh jalapeño peppers (about 12–16 ounces)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (sharp or mild)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Cream cheese or sour cream (for the eyes)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line your baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the jalapeños: Cut each pepper in half lengthwise. Using a small spoon, scrape out the seeds and white membranes. Rinse the pepper halves and pat them dry with a paper towel.
  3. Make the filling: In a small bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined and smooth.
  4. Fill the peppers: Using a small spoon, stuff each jalapeño half with the cream cheese mixture, level with the cut edge (about a rounded teaspoon per half). Set aside.
  5. Prepare the dough: Unroll the crescent roll dough on a clean cutting board. Pinch the perforated seams together to create one solid sheet. Cut the dough into thin strips, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide and 3-4 inches long.
  6. Wrap the mummies: Take one filled jalapeño half and start wrapping a dough strip around it, angling it slightly. Leave a small gap at one end for the face (about 1/2 inch of filling visible). Overlap strips slightly and press ends to seal. Place on the prepared baking sheet, face-up. Repeat with all peppers.
  7. Apply the egg wash: In a small bowl, beat the egg with the tablespoon of water until smooth. Gently brush each mummy with the egg wash.
  8. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and puffed.
  9. Add the eyes: Remove from the oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes. Using a tiny dab of cream cheese or sour cream, add two small dots to the exposed filling area to create the eyes.
  10. Serve warm: Transfer to a serving platter. Best eaten within 20 minutes of baking.

Notes

For less heat, remove all white membranes from jalapeños. Keep dough cold for easier handling. Don’t overfill peppers to prevent leakage. Can prep filled peppers and cut dough strips up to a day ahead. For a milder version, use mini sweet bell peppers. For dairy-free, use vegan cream cheese and cheddar. For gluten-free, use gluten-free crescent dough.
