A hearty and comforting chili made with ground turkey, sweet potatoes, black beans, and fire-roasted tomatoes, perfect for cold evenings. This one-pot meal is quick, easy, and packed with flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced into ½-inch cubes (about 3 cups)
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 can (15 ounces) fire-roasted diced tomatoes, with their juices
  • 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
  • Avocado, diced (for garnish)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for garnish)
  • Sour cream or Greek yogurt (for garnish)
  • Lime wedges (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat until shimmering.
  2. Add the diced onion and cook for 4-5 minutes until translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground turkey and cook for 6-8 minutes, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until no pink remains. Let it brown slightly for flavor.
  4. Sprinkle the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, pepper, and cayenne (if using) over the turkey. Stir constantly for about 1 minute to toast the spices.
  5. Stir in the diced sweet potatoes and red bell pepper. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Add the fire-roasted diced tomatoes (with their juices) and chicken broth. Stir well, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
  7. Stir in the black beans. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sweet potatoes are fork-tender.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt, cayenne, or a squeeze of lime juice if needed.
  9. Remove from heat and let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Ladle into bowls and garnish with cilantro, avocado, cheese, sour cream, and lime wedges.

Notes

For a thicker chili, mash some sweet potatoes against the side of the pot before serving or simmer uncovered for the last 10 minutes. This chili tastes even better the next day as flavors meld. To freeze, cool completely and store in airtight containers for up to 3 months.
