A classic green bean casserole with a perfectly crispy French’s onion topping, creamy mushroom sauce, and easy pantry ingredients. Perfect for Thanksgiving or any comforting holiday meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (14-ounce) cans cut green beans, drained (or fresh/frozen green beans, blanched 34 minutes)
  • 1 1/3 cups French’s crispy fried onions, divided
  • 1 (10.5-ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 2/3 cup whole milk (or almond milk for dairy-free)
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch of salt, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Drain the green beans thoroughly to avoid a watery casserole.
  3. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup and milk. Stir until smooth.
  4. Add black pepper, salt, and if using, garlic powder and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well.
  5. Add the drained green beans and 2/3 cup of French’s crispy onions to the bowl. Gently fold to combine without mashing the beans.
  6. Transfer the mixture into a greased 1.5-quart baking dish or 8×8-inch square pan. Spread evenly.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining 2/3 cup of French’s onions on top and drizzle melted butter over them.
  8. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes until bubbly and golden brown. If onions brown too quickly, tent loosely with foil after 20 minutes.
  9. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
  10. Optional: For extra crispy topping, broil for 1-2 minutes at the end, watching closely to avoid burning.

Notes

Split the French’s onions into two portions—mix half into the casserole and sprinkle the rest on top before baking. Add a fresh handful right after baking for extra crunch. If onions brown too fast, tent with foil after 20 minutes. For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free mushroom soup and milk, and dairy-free crispy onions. Leftovers reheat well covered at 325°F for 15 minutes; add fresh onions and broil briefly to refresh topping.
