Kid-Approved Spiderweb Taco Dip: Easy Black Bean Spiders

spiderweb taco dip - featured image

A fun and spooky taco dip with a creamy, cheesy base, seasoned beef, and a sour cream spiderweb design topped with adorable black bean spiders. Perfect for Halloween parties, family movie nights, or turning a grumpy Tuesday into a celebration.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 works great; you can also use ground turkey for a leaner option)
  • 1 packet taco seasoning (I prefer McCormick or make your own with chili powder, cumin, and garlic powder)
  • 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed (save a few whole beans for the spiders)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened (this is the secret to that creamy, scoopable texture)
  • 1 cup salsa (mild or medium, depending on your crowd; I use Pace for a consistent flavor)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or a Mexican blend; pre-shredded works fine, but freshly grated melts smoother)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (full-fat gives the best swirl; Greek yogurt works too if you’re watching calories)
  • 1/4 cup black beans, whole (from the same canโ€”just pick out the prettiest ones)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for drizzling on the spiders to make them shiny)
  • Optional: sliced black olives (for spider eyesโ€”my kids love this detail)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC). While it’s heating, set your cream cheese on the counter to softenโ€”this takes about 15 minutes.
  2. Brown the beef. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef for 6-8 minutes, breaking it up with a spatula, until it’s no longer pink. Drain off the excess fat (about 2 tablespoons). Add the taco seasoning and 1/4 cup water, then stir and let it simmer for 2 minutes until thickened. Set aside.
  3. Mix the creamy base. In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and salsa. Stir until smooth and well-blended. It should be a pretty pinkish-red color. Spread this mixture evenly into the bottom of your pie plate.
  4. Layer the beef. Spoon the seasoned beef over the cream cheese mixture, spreading it gently with the back of a spoon. Don’t press too hardโ€”you want distinct layers.
  5. Add the beans and cheese. Sprinkle the drained black beans (save about 1/4 cup for the spiders) over the beef. Then top with the shredded cheddar cheese, covering everything evenly.
  6. Bake the dip. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges are just starting to brown. The dip should be hot all the way through.
  7. Create the spiderweb. Remove the dip from the oven. Spoon the sour cream into a small piping bag or plastic baggie with a tiny corner snipped off. Starting from the center of the dip, pipe a small circle of sour cream. Then pipe concentric circles around it, spacing them about an inch apart. Using a toothpick or skewer, start at the center and drag it outward through the circles to create the web lines. Wipe the toothpick clean between each drag for clean lines. Repeat until you have a full web …
  8. Make the black bean spiders. In a small bowl, toss the reserved whole black beans with the olive oil to make them shiny. For each spider, place one bean in the center of the web for the body. Then use a toothpick to place six to eight smaller bean pieces (cut a few beans in half) around it for legs. If using olives, place tiny slivers on the body for eyes. I usually make 3-4 spiders across the web.
  9. Serve immediately. Place the dip on the table with a pile of tortilla chips and watch the magic happen. The spiders will stay put if you’re careful, but kids love rearranging them.

Notes

Don’t overmix the cream cheese to avoid graininess. Let the beef cool slightly before layering to prevent the cream cheese from melting. Use a light hand with the sour cream web and wipe the toothpick between each drag for clean lines. The dip can be assembled ahead (without the sour cream web and spiders) and refrigerated for up to 24 hours. Leftovers keep in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheat well.
