A bright, lively, and easy-to-make summer party drink combining fresh blueberries, lemon, dry white wine, and sparkling wine for a refreshing and bubbly sangria.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries, washed and picked over
  • 2 large lemons, thinly sliced with rind on
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry white wine (Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio preferred)
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) sparkling wine (Prosecco recommended)
  • 1/2 cup simple syrup (homemade or store-bought, adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup orange liqueur (optional, e.g., Cointreau or Triple Sec)
  • A handful of fresh mint leaves, for garnish
  • Ice cubes, as needed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fruit (5 minutes): Rinse 1 cup of fresh blueberries and pick out any stems or soft spots. Thinly slice two large lemons, removing seeds. Set aside.
  2. Muddle the Blueberries (3 minutes): In a large pitcher, gently press half the blueberries with a muddler or wooden spoon to release juice without pureeing.
  3. Add Lemon Slices and Syrup (2 minutes): Toss in all lemon slices and pour in 1/2 cup simple syrup. Stir gently to combine. Adjust sweetness if desired.
  4. Pour in White Wine and Liqueur (5 minutes): Add the entire bottle of dry white wine and 1/4 cup orange liqueur if using. Stir well.
  5. Chill (at least 1 hour): Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least one hour to let flavors meld.
  6. Just Before Serving (3 minutes): Add the remaining fresh blueberries and the chilled bottle of sparkling wine. Stir gently to mix without flattening bubbles.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Add fresh mint leaves for aroma and visual appeal. Serve over ice cubes in preferred glasses.

Notes

If fresh blueberries are not in season, frozen blueberries can be used after slight thawing. For a lower-alcohol or non-alcoholic version, substitute white wine with sparkling water or non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice and omit orange liqueur. Chill sparkling wine before adding to keep bubbles lively. Avoid vigorous stirring after adding sparkling wine to maintain fizz. Adjust simple syrup sweetness after chilling. Fresh mint leaves release more aroma when gently crushed before adding.
